About the Job
The Oswego County E-911 Department is currently recruiting Telecommunicators to answer emergency and non-emergency calls for police, fire, and emergency medical services and relay information to appropriate personnel. The incumbent operates a variety of communications equipment including radio and telephone equipment and computer terminals to relay information and dispatch emergency personnel and equipment. Under general supervision of a higher-ranking Telecommunicator or site supervisor and within the parameters of established operating procedures and guidelines, employees are expected to exercise independent judgment, alertness and responsiveness in emergency situations. The job involves an unusual working environment which includes high stress dealing with life and death situations, the need to remain calm in emergency situations and the need to be polite when dealing with angry and abusive people.  Employees are required to work shifts which cover both day and night hours including weekdays and weekends.

Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: All candidates for employment as public safety telecommunicators shall be subject to a background investigation, including a fingerprint-based criminal history search, medical examination to include a hearing test, and a psychological examination/personality assessment, prior to appointment. All such assessments shall be in conformity with New York Executive Law article 15 (Human Rights Law).

This title has been approved to be filled without the need to take an exam for a limited period through the HELP Program. Candidates appointed permanently to this title will NOT need to take an exam and will remain in their position even when the HELP Program ends.

Pay Rate: $21.83 per hour plus competitive benefits package including: health, life, dental and vision insurance; NYS Retirement; and Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
